Size Matters
More and more of our customers have been asking for minimalist framing. “Minimalist framing is an approach that champions the ethos of simplicity, using clean lines, neutral colors, and unembellished designs that do not detract from the art itself.” While this concept is not new, there is a disconnect between this buzz word and understanding how and when you can apply this in custom framing.

For smaller pieces, thin frames are no problem, but we consistently get requests for 40 x 60 pieces of art, or even worse, mirrors with a tiny frame. The problem arises because of stability. The frame has to be substantial enough to hold the glass, acrylic or mirror. Metal frames provide more stability but are far more limited in length and color options.

If you have a large piece of art or a need a large mirror, consider using a minimum 2″ wide frame that blends well with your art and decor. If you think that a minimal frame at that size costs less, be aware that although we can make it work, the additional labor and materials to brace the back to be able to use a thin frame may cost more than just using the proper size frame. If wanting a minimalist frame is about aesthetics, we can make it work, but if you are trying to save money let us quote you the options to make sure you really are saving money.

In our store, any frame over 40 x 60 requires acrylic. It certainly helps that acrylic is lighter, but the larger the framing, the wider the frame needs to be. Some pieces are so big that they need both a wider frame and thicker acrylic. All of these options are available, and we can walk you through them.

We want you to love your framing, so if minimalist is your goal, we’ll work with you to accomplish that look. We just want you to understand why it can cost more to do a minimal design at larger sizes. Yep, it’s true, size matters
